The Difference Between Fear and Intuition
How to tell what your instincts are actually saying
As we’ve been talking about instincts, a common question comes up:
“How do I know if what I’m feeling is real… or if I’m just overreacting?”
It’s a fair question.
Because not every uncomfortable feeling is a warning.
And not every calm situation is safe.
So how do you tell the difference?
Two Very Different Signals
Fear and intuition can feel similar at first.
But they function differently.
Fear is often future-focused.
It imagines what could happen.
It builds scenarios.
It tends to escalate the more you think about it.
Intuition is different.
It’s usually immediate.
It’s tied to something happening right now.
And it’s often quiet and specific.
Not dramatic.
Just persistent.
What This Looks Like
Fear sounds like:
“What if something happens?”
“What if I’m in danger?”
Intuition sounds more like:
“Something about this person feels off.”
“This situation isn’t sitting right.”
Fear pulls you into the future.
Intuition anchors you in the present.
Why This Matters
Many people ignore intuition because they don’t want to be ruled by fear.
So they dismiss the feeling entirely.
But that creates a problem.
Because they’re not actually ignoring fear.
They’re ignoring information.
A Simple Way to Check
When something feels off, ask:
Is there something happening right now that’s causing this?
A behavior
A tone
A boundary being tested
If the answer is yes, treat it as worth paying attention to.
Not proof of danger.
But a reason to stay aware.
What You Do Next
You don’t need to overreact.
But you also don’t need to dismiss the signal.
You can simply create space.
Step away.
Pause the interaction.
Give yourself room to reassess.
Next Week
Next week we move from awareness to action:
What to do when something feels off in real time.
